Living in Göttingen

There is more to life than science and studies. Every once in a while you have to switch off your tablet and close up your books. For a bit of variety in between study and research sessions, Göttingen has quite a lot to offer. Something for everyone. No matter where you’re from. Rather than being contrived, internationality has been a fact of daily life here for almost 300 years. Situated in the south of the North — smack in the middle of the country — Göttingen is home to approximately 130,000 people. More than 160 nations are represented. That’s why all of the world’s major religious communities also have a home here.

A city where everything is in close proximity, bicycles dictate traffic, it’s easy to get your bearings (free-of-charge with the city buses thanks to the semester ticket): In Göttingen, you feel at home in no time. Culture, sports, movies, dancing, parties — the social life is diverse and the low prices are student-friendly.

The catchphrase: “low prices”, not least because of the cultural semester ticket. Included in your student ID, this gets you free or heavily discounted admission to various events at numerous cultural institutions in Göttingen. These include, among others, three theatres, two cultural centres, a dozen cinemas and numerous performance venues. There are pubs and discos aplenty. With events and parties almost every day. Just head over and mingle. Or go out with friends, hang out and chill. And without having to worry – the city has a refreshingly low crime rate and a pre-eminent range of medical services.

In short — a dynamic and vibrant city! The Göttingen University Sports Centre offers students from all four of Göttingen’s higher learning institutions a wide range of courses: from Aikido to Yoga – you can do almost any sport imaginable. About 100 sports clubs round out the offer. Skiing in the Harz Mountains, climbing in the Solling forest, rowing on the Weser River: Outdoor enthusiasts won't be disappointed by the attractive surrounding countryside.

And there are chances to save money when it comes to everyday life as well: Participating in the local discount programme "Aktion Heimspiel" once you’ve registered at the New Town Hall is a very convenient way to be thrifty when you’re shopping or going out. Not to mention that it makes you feel like you belong.

Welcome to Göttingen!
